About
The journey to Kalsubai began around 12 a.m. before this exposure was made. It was about a six-hour level 7 hike in the dark, which wasn't too tough but still pretty energy-consuming ascending to the top. It helped that six other yogis from Sky Light Yoga were there every step of the way. Once we made it to the temple, we sat down in siddasana and fought off the monkeys attempting to steal our phones and water bottles. The sky does not get caught up in the clouds. The sky represents us, who we are as the self, ever-expansive. The clouds represent the many variables of practical reality. On my path, I’ve seen how easy it is to dwell on all the problems our mind generates. There will always be animated moments of life; how we deal with them is our choice. At 31 years of age, I want peace, not to be pieces. Not to wear the mask of anger or despair for too long. Here’s a mind nugget I carry in my pocket: anger leads to loss of memory. Loss of memory leads to loss of reason. Loss of reason leads to one’s own destruction. This photograph reminds me of the monkey mind focusing all its attention on the problems clouding my vision of what is truly important, inner peace. Starring down at the clouds creates harm; surrendering to this life creates harmony. Photographing Nature is therapeutic. Always bringing me back to these simple yet profound messages.
Kalsubai Peak, 1,646 metres (5,400 ft), is the highest point in Maharashtra; Ahmednagar district of Akole Taluka.
The photograph “The Sky Does Not Get Caught Up in the Clouds” by Nkosi Gomez is a contemplative black-and-white landscape that merges natural stillness with quiet symbolism. Set high on Kalsubai Peak, the image looks out over layered hills that dissolve softly into mist, creating a vast, almost ethereal horizon.
In the foreground, two monkeys occupy a simple, weathered metal structure resembling a cross or signpost. One sits perched on a horizontal bar, reaching upward and outward, while the other rests below on a rock, its posture more grounded and observant. Their positions create a subtle tension—one elevated and engaged, the other still and contemplative—echoing the duality between action and awareness.
The stark textures of rock and metal contrast with the softness of the distant landscape, while the grayscale tones strip the scene to its essentials. The emptiness of the sky and the fading hills emphasize openness and expansiveness, aligning with the idea that the “sky” represents the true self—unchanging and vast—while the shifting terrain and the monkeys’ restless energy mirror the “clouds,” or the distractions and fluctuations of the mind.
Knowing the photograph was taken after an overnight ascent with fellow practitioners from Sky Light Yoga deepens its meaning. The physical challenge of the climb, the shared stillness at the summit, and even the playful intrusion of monkeys become part of a larger meditation. The monkeys here can be read as embodiments of the “monkey mind”—restless, reactive, easily caught in momentary impulses—contrasted against the calm, enduring presence of the landscape.
The image ultimately reflects a personal philosophy: that peace comes not from eliminating life’s “clouds,” but from refusing to become entangled in them. By lifting the gaze beyond immediate distractions—like the monkeys or the shifting terrain—the photograph invites a quieter awareness, one rooted in acceptance, presence, and inner balance.

Hello world, in this life, I walk with a camera in hand as a tool and form of creative expression. When I was younger, I would hear doubts about how anyone could sustain a living through photography. I’ve learned that the world has more stories than it wants to tell. In the last 15 years of placing all my focus on studying and working in this medium, I can say confidently that everything needs visual representation in a modern world. Through capturing light, doors continue to open, giving more and more meaning to my life. I share these words and lean completely forward to one of my biggest dreams, putting my work out there in the physical form of a print. Your support during this time goes a long way. I am simply an instrument of our creator, telling a story through observation. I appreciate all your support and engagement as I set the intention to get more of my work out into our world.
