In “Golden Trumpet Tree in Infrared,” Nkosi Gomez transforms an ordinary landscape into something otherworldly through the distinct visual language of black-and-white infrared photography. A sprawling tree dominates the frame, its branches twisting low and wide across a textured ground. Instead of appearing leafy and green, the foliage glows in brilliant, almost luminous white—an effect of infrared light reflecting off chlorophyll, often called the Wood effect.

The sky behind it falls into a deep, velvety black, creating a striking contrast that isolates the tree as if it exists in its own dimension. Gomez pushes the tonal separation to feel dramatic: bright foliage, mid-gray earth, and a near-black sky compress the scene into a surreal spectrum that feels both stark and dreamlike. The tree’s form—gnarled, heavy, and slightly leaning—deepens the sense of age and quiet endurance, while its glowing canopy softens that weight with an ethereal presence.

Working with long exposures at low ISO, Gomez approaches the image with deliberateness, pursuing a stillness as if time itself has slowed enough for the invisible spectrum to reveal itself.
