Swayam Jyotis Photobook, 2023.
Swayam Jyotis, meaning “Self-shining,” is a photographic meditation on light, consciousness, pilgrimage, and the practice of seeing. Published in 2023, the book was created from photographs made during Nkosi Sri Govindaji’s journey through India. It follows an outer passage through the Western Ghats, also known as the Sahyadri Mountains, the Deccan Plateau, ancient caves, temples, villages, markets, roads, and sacred gathering places. At the same time, it traces a quieter inner journey toward self-inquiry and spiritual awareness.
The book opens in vivid color. Orange walls hold the warmth of the afternoon. Painted trucks and buses move through the frame like traveling murals. Women pass through the streets in brightly colored saris. Textiles, flowers, shrines, weathered architecture, animals, workers, and quiet doorways reveal the visual richness of everyday India. These photographs do not separate the sacred from the ordinary. A worn wall, a roadside encounter, or a person resting in a doorway is approached with the same attention as a temple or place of pilgrimage.
As the sequence continues, color gradually gives way to black and white. The visual language becomes quieter and more contemplative. Mountains disappear into layers of mist. Human figures emerge from ancient stone. Fire interrupts the darkness. Farmers, pilgrims, teachers, animals, and landscapes are shaped through shadow, texture, and gesture. This transition reflects a movement from the intensity of the outer world toward the stillness of the inner Self.
At the heart of Swayam Jyotis is the relationship between physical light and the light of consciousness. Photography depends on light passing through a lens and being recorded by film or a sensor. Yogic philosophy asks us to consider the deeper light through which all experience is seen and known. Guided by the practice of vichar, or self-inquiry, the book returns to the essential question: Who am I?
Rather than offering a fixed answer, the photographs invite the viewer to remain present with that question. The camera becomes more than a recording device. It becomes a tool for contemplation and a doorway into the shared field between photographer, subject, and place. The work considers the individual self, or jiva, in relation to Atman, the universal Self, and Brahman, the consciousness present within all existence.
Swayam Jyotis is not a conventional travel book or a simple record of India. It is a carefully sequenced visual pilgrimage that asks the viewer to slow down, observe closely, and recognize beauty within both the extraordinary and the overlooked. The book reflects Nkosi’s belief that photography can become a moving meditation: a way of meeting the world with reverence, humility, and complete attention.
The publication includes a foreword by Sri Sudarshan Jyotirmayananda Saraswati, reflections on yoga and consciousness, and photographs by Nkosi Sri Govindaji. It is intended for collectors of fine-art and documentary photography, students of yoga and Vedanta, travelers, and anyone drawn to the meeting point between visual art and spiritual inquiry.
