About

This Rwandan capture is a strong reminder of the nature of the mind. Let’s say you are the vacant room. Outside the window of that room is the mind and all its activities. When one’s attention is pulled out of the room symbolic of the self, their awareness lives in the realm of the mind. When I sit in complete stillness and silence, at first I am immediately confronted with the turbulence of thought. I call this mental gymnastics, as it’s the mind’s nature to receive and send out information constantly. With this understanding, I notice the more I focus my attention on the breath, the circles of thought become smaller and smaller until there is nothing at all. A state of complete being and self-awareness. There are infinite reminders through the photographs I produce that relate to getting back to self from moment to moment. Ofcourse I share this as a personal view from this side of the fire.

In “Through Thy Window,” Nkosi Gomez distills a fleeting street moment into a quiet meditation on awareness and perception. The black-and-white photograph captures a young child leaning out of a bus window, their gaze cast slightly upward and outward, as if caught between curiosity and contemplation. The bus itself fills most of the frame—its worn surface, signage, and reflections forming a textured barrier between interior and exterior worlds.

The child’s face becomes the focal point, emerging from the dark rectangular frame of the window like a thought surfacing in the mind. There is a subtle tension here: the stillness of the subject contrasted against the implied motion of the vehicle and the blurred natural surroundings beyond. The outside world—trees and light—feels distant, softened, almost secondary to the intensity of that single glance.

Nkosi uses this simple composition to mirror a deeper inner dynamic. The window operates as both a literal and symbolic threshold. Inside suggests the quiet, vacant “room” of the self; outside, the restless movement of the mind and its endless stream of impressions. The child, positioned at this boundary, embodies the moment where awareness either turns outward—becoming absorbed in thought—or remains anchored within.

The photograph’s tonal range enhances this idea. The darker interior frames the subject in introspection, while the brighter exterior hints at distraction, activity, and multiplicity. Yet nothing in the image feels chaotic. Instead, it invites a pause—a recognition of that subtle shift between observing and being carried away.

Ultimately, “Through Thy Window” is less about the scene itself and more about the act of seeing. It reflects Gomez’s ongoing inquiry into presence: the discipline of returning, again and again, to the still center beneath the noise. The child’s gaze becomes a quiet reminder—awareness is always one step away from coming home.

Hello world in this life I walk with a camera in hand as a tool and form of creative expression. When I was younger, I would hear doubts about how anyone could sustain a living through photography. I’ve learned that the world has more stories than it wants to tell. In the last 15 years of placing all my focus on studying and working in this medium, I can say confidently that everything needs visual representation in a modern world. Through capturing light doors continue to open giving more and more meaning to my life. I share these words and lean completely forward to one of my biggest dreams, putting my work out there in the physical form of a print. Your support during this time goes a long way. I am simply an instrument of our creator telling a story through observation. I appreciate all your support and engagement as I set the intention to get more of my work out into our world.
