A soft warrior, three of her swords, and a rising burning star. Yet still no location to photograph. What was that saying again? An artist without a process is stuck twiddling their fingers, hoping for luck. Perhaps I’ve approached shoots this way so many times that it’s now become a natural part of the process. Nevertheless, a creative pursuit of the unknown every time. Meet Yuan Yin. Another advanced personality out there walking the path of the hero’s journey. Her practice centers around bringing depth and beauty to sword work. Finding herself at a plateau with martial arts and, like many of us at times, at the bottom of the barrel in self-esteem. Yin was first introduced to a Tai Chi sword made by a friend ackowledging it as an empowering symbol. A sword that came with the gift of trusting enough to reach her full potential. This continued practice now serves as a structure, discipline, and standard shes set for herself. A practice that prevents one from dropping into the many offshoots of old programming. She shares that the sword is a daily reminder of knowing that we are more powerful than we think. This piece of wisdom spreads throughout her every decision, word, and action. Bringing it into all the arenas of life in full embodiment of the practice. Going against the grain of the worldly standards for femininity, Yin reclaims those childlike feelings of awe and wonder. Relearning and reframing. Taking what is relevant and discarding the rest. She teaches how swords reveal that power is never outside of us. That resolve is created through softness. Flow is created through direction, and freedom is created through constriction. Opposing forces that feed one another.
