In “I Wish There Was a Narrative Here,” Nkosi Gomez leans fully into ambiguity, presenting a composition that resists immediate meaning while inviting quiet curiosity. Centered in the frame stands a tall, ribbed cylindrical structure—industrial in texture, almost totemic in presence—positioned against a pastel backdrop of soft blue and muted pink architectural planes. The scene is clean, minimal, and carefully balanced, with long shadows stretching across the pale ground, suggesting late afternoon light.

What disrupts this orderly stillness are two human hands emerging from either side of the cylinder, gently wrapping around it. The body they belong to is completely concealed, leaving only this subtle evidence of human presence. The gesture is neither forceful nor dramatic—it feels tentative, almost playful, as if the hidden figure is both interacting with and disappearing into the object at once.

The photograph operates in a space between sculpture and performance. The cylinder becomes a stand-in for the body, or perhaps a barrier to it, while the hands act as the only bridge between viewer and subject. There is a quiet tension between visibility and concealment, participation and absence. The viewer is left to question: is this an act of hiding, embracing, or becoming?

Color plays a significant role in shaping the mood. The soft, almost surreal palette contrasts with the rough, utilitarian quality of the central object, creating a visual dialogue between industrial form and human touch. The verticality of the composition emphasizes stillness and isolation, while the clean geometry of the background reinforces a sense of control and intentionality.

The title, “I Wish There Was a Narrative Here,” adds a layer of irony. It acknowledges the viewer’s instinct to search for story, yet gently denies resolution. Instead of offering a clear message, Gomez creates space—an open-ended moment where meaning is not given but suggested. In this way, the photograph becomes less about narrative and more about presence, perception, and the subtle poetry of the unexplained.

Photo finish: Legacy Etching is a pure white 100% cotton fibre paper with a textured matte finish. This paper simulates the touch and feel of old-world artist etching pads and handmade paper, but with the advantage of current technological improvements. It has an industry-leading microporous inkjet receptive layer that produces deep, rich blacks (Dmax), expanded color gamut, and gentle tonal gradations, and will provide outstanding image permanence and durability.

Frame NOT Included.

Hello world, in this life, I walk with a camera in hand as a tool and form of creative expression. When I was younger, I would hear doubts about how anyone could sustain a living through photography. I’ve learned that the world has more stories than it wants to tell. In the last 15 years of placing all my focus on studying and working in this medium, I can say confidently that everything needs visual representation in a modern world. Through capturing light, doors continue to open, giving more and more meaning to my life. I share these words and lean completely forward to one of my biggest dreams, putting my work out there in the physical form of a print. Your support during this time goes a long way. I am simply an instrument of our creator, telling a story through observation. I appreciate all your support and engagement as I set the intention to get more of my work out into our world.
