In “Weird little birthday girl,” Nkosi Gomez presents a quietly surreal, almost playful disruption of the natural landscape. A tree stands at the center of a gently sloping, grassy hill, its pale trunk rising into a canopy of soft green leaves. But instead of a typical human presence beside it, the figure is strangely fused with the tree itself.

Only the lower half of a person is visible: legs in white socks and brown leather boots extend outward from the trunk, as though the body has been absorbed into it. A light, flowing skirt or dress drapes around the point where the figure meets the tree, giving the illusion that the trunk has “dressed” itself or that the person has dissolved into nature mid-motion. The posture—legs slightly bent and relaxed—feels casual, even childlike, contrasting with the uncanny impossibility of the scene.

The environment is calm and grounded: scattered leaves on the grass, a muted sky, and surrounding trees that feel ordinary and undisturbed. This normalcy heightens the strangeness of the central image. Gomez uses this visual contradiction to blur boundaries between human and environment, identity and object, presence and disappearance.

The title adds another layer—suggesting celebration, individuality, or eccentricity—yet the figure’s partial absence resists any straightforward narrative. Instead, the image feels like a quiet riddle: a moment where the body becomes landscape, and the familiar slips gently into the absurd.

Photo finish: Legacy Etching is a pure white 100% cotton fibre paper with a textured matte finish. This paper simulates the touch and feel of old-world artist etching pads and handmade paper, but with the advantage of current technological improvements. It has an industry-leading microporous inkjet receptive layer that produces deep, rich blacks (Dmax), expanded color gamut, and gentle tonal gradations, and will provide outstanding image permanence and durability.

Hello world, in this life, I walk with a camera in hand as a tool and form of creative expression. When I was younger, I would hear doubts about how anyone could sustain a living through photography. I’ve learned that the world has more stories than it wants to tell. In the last 15 years of placing all my focus on studying and working in this medium, I can say confidently that everything needs visual representation in a modern world. Through capturing light, doors continue to open, giving more and more meaning to my life. I share these words and lean completely forward to one of my biggest dreams, putting my work out there in the physical form of a print. Your support during this time goes a long way. I am simply an instrument of our creator, telling a story through observation. I appreciate all your support and engagement as I set the intention to get more of my work out into our world.
